John T., “Tom,” 89, Sidman, died September 16, 2016, at Maple Winds Care Center, surrounded by loved ones. Born August 22, 1927, in Croyle Township, son of Oliver W. and Cecilia A. (Cramer) Plummer.
Preceded in death by parents; wife of 53 years, Magdalene M. (Bodenschatz), who died August 5, 2013; grandson, Nicholas Wirfel; sister, Jean Otten; infant sister, Ida Mae; brothers, Donald, George and Raymond R. “Pop” Sr.; infant brother, Leo; and sons-in-law, Herbert A. Wirfel, David F. McMahon and James Hammond.
Survived by children, Betty (Smith) Wirfel-McMahon, Ebensburg; Patty (Smith) Hammond, Summerhill; Jack “Radar,” Smith, married to Martha (Wirfel), New Germany; Judi (Huber), wife of Stephen J. Pastva, South Fork; and Joe Huber, married to Jan (Rocker), South Fork; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; sisters, Agnes Plummer, St. John Paul II Manor, Cresson; Theresa Reilly, Adelphi, Maryland; and Catherine Millard, Seaford, Delaware; sister-in-law, Jane Plummer, Summerhill; and numerous nieces, nephews and other beloved family and friends.
Tom served in the Merchant Marine and was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Faithful member of St. Michael Catholic Church, St. Michael, where he served as Eucharistic Minister and was active with the Holy Name Society. Retired from Bethlehem Steel, Gautier Division, after more than 30 years of service. Lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council, 2275; 4th Degree member of Prince Gallitzin Assembly Council 0919, Loretto; and past District Deputy and Grand Knight. Democratic Party Committee Man and head supervisor of Croyle Township for over 30 years where he was instrumental in assisting with many projects, including the 219 New Germany Exit and paving of Park Road though the 1889 Park. Member of St. Michael American Legion Post 551 and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. Served on the Community Action Board of Directors and the Beaverdale Ambulance Board of Directors. He cherished spending time with family and working hard on the farm. He enjoyed a great hand of pinochle, lively political discussions and loved helping others. We are forever grateful he chose our family all those 57 years ago. Thanks for being our Dad!
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until time of Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, where Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Catholic Church, by Father Brian Warchola.
