SMAY – Richard A., “Yogi Bear,” 92, St. Michael, died peacefully at home April 15, 2017. Born December 13, 1924, in Sidman, son of Doyle C. and Ada (Weaver) Smay. Preceded in death by parents; infant daughter, Shirley; grandson, Tony Smay; sisters, Marie Barczyk, and Dolly Myers; and brothers, Gerald, Curtis and Dean Smay.
Survived by loving wife of 66 years, Thelma (Johnson) Smay, whom he married August 20, 1949; sons, Barry, married to Kathleen (Blanchetti), St. Michael; and Rodney, engaged to Joan Martin, Conestoga; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and sister, Nonie Byers, Sidman.
Yogi was a US Army veteran of WWII. Co-owner of the former S&S Coal Co., owned and operated his own truck, roadkill and debris cleanup contractor for PennDOT, retired coal miner, and jack of all trades. Member of American Legion Post 653 and VFW Post 7524, South Fork; and a lifetime member and past president of the St. Michael Sportsmen’s Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Sunday night card games, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until time of service at Noon Thursday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, by his granddaughter, the Rev. Tawny Bernhardt.
