WIRFEL – Leon P., 79, New Germany, died peacefully February 10, 2017, at home. Born July 17, 1937, in New Germany, son of Felix and Adelaide (Illig) Wirfel. Preceded in death by parents, brothers, Robert, Cletus, David and Charles and brother-in-law, Billy Bagshaw.
Survived by brothers and sisters, Anna Bagshaw, Port Vue; Frances, wife of Richard Wess; Mary Haberl; and Martha, wife of Jack Smith, all of New Germany; Elizabeth, wife of Richard McCall, Summerhill, Kenneth married to Anna Marie (Hajnos), Windber; and Ermin, married to Hazel (Freidhof), Munster; sister-in-laws, Shirley (Gailey) Wirfel, New Germany; and Constance (Krug) Wirfel, Munster; and also numerous beloved nieces, and nephews.
Leon was a graduate of Beaverdale – Wilmore High School, Class of 1955. He Retired after many years of service from Bethlehem Steel Corp., Open Hearth Division. Member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Germany; Laurel Run Rod and Gun Club, Mineral Point; the former Broken Arrow Archery Club; and a lifetime member of the NRA. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed golfing, biking, silhouette shooting and coon hunting with his dogs. He faithfully tended to the family homestead and enjoyed teaching the next generation about hard work and the unique rewards of farming.
Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, where vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by Father Leon Hont, OSB.
