SMAY – Kevin J., 61, South Fork, died January 31, 2019, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born December 23, 1957, in Johnstown, son of Junior “Chub” and Dolores M. (Carpenter) Smay.
Preceded in death by parents; and mother-in-law, Helen M. (Guinard) Bertolino.
Survived by loving wife of 32 years, Christine B. (Bertolino) Smay, whom he married August 2, 1986; beloved daughters, Cara M., wife of Michael J. Ferrante, Windber; and Courtney L., wife of Andrew B. Swanson, Sidman; cherished granddaughters, Auden J., Blaken M. and Cameron L.; sister, Karen M. Smay, Sidman; father-in-law, James A. Bertolino, South Fork; and numerous other beloved family and friends.
Kevin was a graduate of Forest Hills High School, class of 1975 and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He pitched minor league ball for the San Francisco Giants farm team, the Clinton Giants, Iowa. Retired elementary teacher from the Forest Hills School District, where for 35 years he represented the very best in teaching. He used his role as a baseball, football, wrestling and strength and training coach to help his student athletes excel in sports and in life. He ran Smay’s Gym in Summerhill and organized and played in the Thursday night “Old Man Basketball League.” His true wealth though was his family and in the many close friendships he cultivated and maintained. His family and friends will hold dear memories of a loving, kind and generous man who was full of life and laughter.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Catholic Church, St. Michael, Father Brian Warchola, Celebrant.
