WERTZ – Jean (Bittner), 83, Johnstown, died December 30, 2018, at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Greensburg. Born March 21, 1935, in Meyersdale, daughter of the late Richard W. and Ethel M. (Orndoff) Bittner.
Predeceased by husband Paul Wertz, Johnstown and brother Kenneth Bittner, Ebensburg.
Survived by sister Kay, widow of George F. Maynard, Parma, Ohio; son Christopher Wertz, married to Joyce (Weber), Jeannette; and grandchildren Heidi and Andrew Wertz.
A 1953 graduate of Meyersdale High School she attended college at the California (PA) and Shippensburg State Teachers Colleges obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1956. Formerly employed by the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 she served as a certified Speech and Hearing Therapist in many of the school districts in the Cambria County area for over 20 years. An avid reader and writer she was well known in the Johnstown area libraries and in writing circles such as the Southern Alleghenies Writers Guild (SAWG). Jean enjoyed singing and was a longtime member of the Johnstown Choraleers. Jean had a unique sense of humor and liked cross stitching, knitting, studying the weather as well as caring for birds, Bassett Hounds, and calico cats.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. Friday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, the Rev. Susan Luttner presiding.
An interment memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2019.
