SOBEL – James S., 85, of South Fork, passed away March 17, 2025 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born November 21, 1939 in South Fork, son of John Stanley and Ann (Rindo) Sobel. Preceded in death by parents and infant brother, Adam John.
Survived by siblings, Irene, widow of Ronald Varnish, Marlene (Bruce) Harvey, Marianne (Thomas) Stefanik, Carol (George) Selepack; special nieces and nephews, Michael (Valerie), Todd (Ronnie), Tommy (Kim), Mark, Doug (Arian), Michele, Teressa, Tara (Tim), Tammy (Ken), Brian (April), Leanne (Brad); and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated from South Fork-Croyle High School in 1957 and was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam Era, stationed in Germany. He worked for General Motors in Maryland and spent many years at C & C Smith Sawmill as a saw operator. Jim was a talented wood craftsman who made clocks, jewelry boxes, and furniture. He crafted and built his wood pieces in his wood shop on his farm and entered his treasured work at the county fair. Jim was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He also loved golfing, bowling, hosting Steeler football parties, and Ford trucks. Jim was a very kind and generous brother, uncle, and friend.
Friends will be received from 3-7 PM Thursday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Father Joseph C. Nale, Celebrant. Committal, St. Mary Cemetery, New Germany. Military rites by St. Michael American Legion Post 551.
