McGARVEY – Hazel, 102, Johnstown, died June 27, 2016 at home. Born April 15, 1914, in South Fork, daughter of John W. and Alice (Davis) Smay.
Preceded in death by parents; first husband, Ardell Strayer; second husband, James McGarvey; daughter and son-in-law, Twila and Len Cameron; daughters-in-law, Liz (Teeter) Strayer and Reba (Herman) Strayer; sisters, Madeline Jane Oswald, Ruth Held, and Nellie Allison; and brothers, Roy, and John Smay.
Survived by children, Ronald “Buck “ Strayer, Johnstown; and Kenneth “Spark” Strayer, Portage; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruby Bloom, Ohio; and brother, James Smay, Johnstown.
During WWII Hazel worked in the repair shop for the PRR, having joined Nearly 100,000 women, from messengers aged 16 to seasoned railroaders of 55 to 65, in keeping America's wartime trains rolling. She was proud of her independence, having lived alone until her passing. She enjoyed tidying up her home and cooking wonderful meals for her family.
Friends will be received from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, South Fork, the Rev. Joseph Stains officiating.
Interment Mount Hope Cemetery.
