SMIACH – Frank R., 87, South Fork, died November 2, 2016 at Windber Hospice. Born May 22, 1929, in St. Michael, son of Michael and Frances (Piskuric) Smiach. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, George, Michael, Steve, John and Charles; sisters, Margaret Smiach, Anna Smiach, Mary Schrader, Dorothy Slovikovski, Lucy Barr and Barbara DeFrank; and son-in-law, Robert Yochimowitz.
Survived by loving wife of 65 years, Pearl (Rudeck) Smiach, whom he married August 18, 1951; children, Sherry, wife of William Agosta, Lilly; Thomas, married to Lea (Carosi), South Fork; Carol, wife of William Mackel, New Germany; Deborah, wife of Robert Zakrzwski, Tyrone; Kathy, wife of Robert Oswalt, South Fork; Mark, married to Annette (Gabany), Murrysville; Paul married to Pamela (Kleinmeyer), Davidsville; and Peggy, wife of Brian Steen, St. Michael; grandchildren, Jennifer (Keith) Jones, Joseph (Kelly) Smiach, Heather Agosta, Melissa Mackel, Jason Mackel, Jessica (Justin) King, Jacob Oswalt, Taylor Oswalt, Michelle Smiach, Kristin (Scott) Wilson, Jonathan (Elizabeth)Yochimowitz, Kyle Smiach, Sarah Zakrzwski, Maggie Steen and Adelai Smiach; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kailyn Jones, Avery, Aubrey and Isaac Smiach and Wyatt Yochimowitz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Frank was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War, having served aboard the USS Timbalier (AVP – 54). He was a retired coal miner from Bethlehem Mine 33, with 25 years of service. Member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, South Fork; UMWA, Local 1368 and St. Michael American Legion Post 551. Frank was the neighborhood repairman and could fix anything. He liked to garden, was a model train enthusiast and enjoyed watching all the Pittsburgh sports teams. He loved to be surrounded by family and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Pappy Choo-Choo."
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, where vigil for the deceased will be held 8 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, by Fr. Joseph C. Nale.
A private committal of the urn will be held at a later date at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, St. Michael.
