GOLAS – Ernest, 87, New Germany, died April 18, 2016, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born Sept. 7, 1928, in Fifficktown, son of Joseph and Antoinette (Kuta) Golas. Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Anne Sakos, Lottie Wilusz and Jane Schowetsky; and brothers, Edward, Henry “Doc”, Eugene “Gene”and Joseph and John, who died in infancy. Survived by wife, Rose M. (Turgeon) Golas; children, Mary Golas, Herndon, Va.; Karen Golas, Bedminster, N.J.; Ruth Golas, New Germany; Sylvia M. Golas, Harrisburg; Ernie Golas, Statesville, N.C.; Theresa Golas, wife of Marty Watters, Claremont, N.C.; and Elizabeth Golas, wife of Frederic Goutte, Messimy-sur-Saone, France; grandchildren, Natacha, Lea and Lilly; and sister, Sylvia Golas, Mahopac, N.Y. Ernest was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War. He graduated in 1957 from the Pennsylvania State University, College of Mineral Industries, with a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. His mining career spanned four decades and included positions with Berwind-White and Bethlehem Mines 32 and 33. He was a member of the former St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Fifficktown, and a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, South Fork. He enjoyed large-scale gardening, especially cultivating blueberries, rhododendrons and orchids as well as woodworking and collecting oil lamps and mining memorabilia. Ernest was a loving father and devoted husband and will be dearly missed. Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Charles O. Dimond Funeral Home, Inc., South Fork, where vigil will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, by Father Joseph C. Nale.
